The size on a pack of coffee filters refers to the size of the filter holder, not the number of cups you brew. For a regular filter coffee maker, size 1x4 or 1x6 is common; for a separate holder where you pour one cup at a time, you use the small size 100. A popular standard filter is the Melitta coffee filters - 1x6 - 40 pieces.
What size coffee filter do I need?
Melitta numbers its filters by holder size. The higher the second digit, the larger the filter. This table helps you choose based on your machine.
| Filter size | Suits | Typical contents |
|---|---|---|
| Size 100 | separate pour-over holder for a single cup | 1 cup at a time |
| 1x2 (102) | small filter coffee maker | 2 to 6 cups |
| 1x4 (104) | standard filter coffee maker | 6 to 10 cups |
| 1x6 (106) | large filter coffee machine | 10 to 15 cups |
The first digit in 1x4 or 1x6 stands for the number of layers of paper at the seam; the second digit is the size that counts. A filter that's too low for your holder collapses when it gets wet, a filter that's too high sticks out above the holder and folds over. The right size makes sure the water sinks evenly through the ground coffee instead of running down the side.
Where do you find the right size?
Not sure which size your maker needs? You'll find the answer faster than you think.
- Check the filter holder or the manual of your coffee maker; the size is often moulded in or listed as 1x4 or 1x6.
- Otherwise, measure the height of the holder: a bigger holder needs a taller filter, so 1x6 instead of 1x4.
- If you pour by hand into a separate holder, choose the small size 100.
For a separate pour-over holder, go for the Melitta coffee filters - size 100/40 - Brown. More for the kitchen can be found in the Home & Kitchen collection.
Does a brown or white filter make a difference?
Brown, unbleached filters are less processed; white ones are bleached for a more neutral colour. It barely affects the taste of your coffee as long as you briefly rinse the filter with hot water first.
Can I use a filter that's too big?
A slightly too large filter often still works, but it can tip over or hang at an angle, letting ground coffee get into the jug alongside the filter. A filter that's too small, on the other hand, overflows. So stick to the size of your holder.
How much coffee goes in a filter?
A rule of thumb is a level scoop of around seven grams per cup. A 1x4 filter comfortably holds enough for a full jug; never fill the filter right to the edge, or water will run past the coffee.
How many filters are in a pack?
That differs per size and version. A pack of 40 is handy if you brew one or two jugs a day; if you get through a lot of coffee, a bulk pack makes more sense. As a rough guide, count on one filter per brew, so you know when to reorder.
Can you reuse a coffee filter?
A paper filter is meant for single use: after brewing it's full of ground coffee and fine oils that give a bitter taste on a second round. If you want something reusable, choose a permanent filter made of plastic or metal, though that needs a slightly coarser grind.
Do Melitta filters fit every brand of coffee maker?
The sizes 1x2, 1x4 and 1x6 are a general standard, so a Melitta filter will usually also fit a maker from another brand, as long as the holder size matches. If you're unsure, check the size marking on your own filter holder and stick to the same size.
