Will a car ashtray fit your cup holder? How to choose the right size

Short answer: yes. There are car ashtrays designed to sit in a cup holder. They have a round, tapered base that fits almost any standard cup holder.

What to look for when it comes to size.

Base diameter: most cup holders are around 7 centimetres wide. An ashtray with a base of about 6 to 7 centimetres sits firmly in place.

Height: a model of around 10 to 12 centimetres stays upright and won't tip over when you brake.

Lid: a flip or sliding lid keeps the ash and the smell inside, even when you accelerate or take a corner.

Removable inner cup: handy for emptying the ashtray and rinsing it clean.

Some models have a small light that comes on when you open the lid, so you can see what you're doing in the dark. That's a convenience feature, not a necessity.

Not sure if your cup holder is big enough? Measure the inside diameter at the top of the holder and compare it with the base of the ashtray. If there are a few millimetres to spare, the ashtray stays put without jamming.
